MO Labor 2008 Named
Ed Tervol
Missouri Labor Ed Tervol is an Executive Board member of IAM Local 778 and the Kansas City Central Labor Council. Ed is the chairman of the Grievance Committee and member of the Legislative Council for the local. He has been active in the labor movement approximately twenty-nine years. Ed comes from a strong union family; his father was a member of IAM Local 314 for 35 years. His maternal grandfather was a member of the Operating Engineers and paternal grandfather was a member of UAW. Ed was born in Indiana, but has lived in the Kansas City, Missouri area for most of his life. Members of Local 788 work as machinists in a variety of industries including manufacturing, railways and airlines. Employers include Honeywell Industries, Folgers Coffee, Yellow Roadway Freight and others. Ed Tervol feels that member representation and contract negotiation are strengths of his local. Ed feels that health care reform is the number one issues this election cycle because increased rates, higher deductibles and out of pocket expenses are eroding wages. “Whether it is statewide or nationwide, we know that we have to have some kind of health care reform to give Americans some relief from the rising costs.” He is also concerned with the outsourcing of jobs overseas. “We would like to see many more manufacturing jobs in America and incentives for companies to keep jobs in America.” Ed is also a proponent of the Employee Free Choice Act because it will allow workers the freedom to form a union and have a voice in the workplace. He feels that employer intimidation throughout the process is a major deterrent for most workers, citing captive audience meetings and illegal terminations as major tactics used by companies during the process. “We’re trying to pass the Employee Free Choice Act because it has become necessary. It will level the playing field for the average worker.” The Labor 2008 Program is important to Ed and members of his local. He and his members participate in labor walks, host fundraisers and phone banks for local and national candidates. “If we all participate in Labor 2008 and do the hard work necessary, we will prevail in November. It is very important that we turn out our members in November.” Read What a Member Thinks click here to go to the Speakout Page Breaking News

Here's a video clip of how companies like Ford are successfully going out of the country to make their products, and, simultaneously blaming unions for not allowing similar expansion in the US. The video doesn't mention the low labor costs of construction or staffing, health care, taxes, pensions, etc. http://info.detnews.com/video/index.cfm?id=1189 Why Union?
