Robert Thomas (RT) Smith

Robert Thomas “R.T.” Smith passed away Sunday November 7, 2004.  RT was 73 years young.  Brother Smith worked at Bendix (what is now Honeywell FM&T) for 40 years, he retired in 1996.  He was a member of Local Lodge 314 until it was merged into Local Lodge 778 were he continued his membership.  Brother Smith was the watchdog for the member’s dues dollars.  He was never afraid to questioned expenditures of the local or district.  RT spoke his mind during meetings whether you liked it or not, he stated his opinions take it or leave it, but he always had the good of the membership in mind.

Brother Smith was active through-out his time in the IAM.  He was President of District 71 and Local Lodge 314.  He held most all positions at the Local level and the District level.  He attended numerous conventions and conferences representing the members of LL314, LL778 and/or District 71, including the Lodge 778 delegate to the 2004 Midwest Council of Machinist.  He represented members at Honeywell as Steward, Committeeperson and Negotiation Committeeperson. Even after retirement he continued to be a full dues paying member; RT had nearly 50 years with the IAM.

I met RT back in the 80’s working at Bendix (what is now Honeywell FM&T).  I don’t remember just what happened, but was new to the company and they were after me.  RT came to the rescue. He backed management down and I had my job.  If the company got in your face, RT was not like some representatives; he did not stand behind you.  No, RT stepped in front of you and got in the company’s face.  Mr. Smith was a force to reckon with.  Now don't get me wrong, RT was not above tell you that you were stupid for getting the company mad.  But he would not let the company said you were stupid.

Brother Smith was missed by the members at Honeywell when he retired.  Now he will be missed by all the membership of Lodge 778.

October 2004:

Beryl Masters

Beryl was the first person with a disability hired by Bendix (Honeywell) where he served as a Tool Room Machinist until retiring in 1985.
