What Can I Expect at the Contract Ratification Vote?

Although negotiations continue with the company, a tentative contract ratification vote has been scheduled for Sunday, November 19, 2017. In anticipation of that date, your Negotiation Committee has put together the following important information.

Keep in mind most of this information, as well as answers to many other questions, can be found in your Negotiations Survival Handbook. However, here’s a quick overview of what you can expect.

A tentative contract ratification vote is scheduled for Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Belton High School located at 801 West North Ave, Belton, MO 64012.

The day will proceed as follows:

In accordance with the Local 778 Bylaws and IAM Constitution, the Negotiating Committee will provide the membership with the final proposed contract changes and its recommendation to either accept or reject. The Committee will also take questions.

At the conclusion of the question and answer session, the membership will vote.

There are two separate ballots.

The first ballot is to accept or reject the contract offer. If a majority of the ballots cast vote to accept the contract, negotiations end and the contract goes into effect at midnight.

If more than 50% of the ballots cast vote to reject the proposed contract, a second vote will be taken to authorize a strike. The second ballot is a “yes” or “no” vote. A two-thirds majority of the ballots cast is needed for strike action. If less than two-thirds of the votes cast are in favor of a strike, the contract offer is accepted by default. Read “What is a Strike Sanction Vote?”

The ballots will be counted immediately after each vote in the presence of the membership and the results will be announced as soon as the count is completed.

Only members in good standing are eligible to vote.
